See, it's not that she was the type to physically hurt her kid, it was more just, she kept forgetting she was a mom. The first eight years of Ezrha’s life, this was all fine. She had her grandparents who loved her, cared for her, and pretty much did all the things her mother never would. Unfortunately, when Ezrha was getting close to nine, her grandmother passed away and her grandfather's health had declined enough that he needed to be put in a home that no one could afford. A year later he died of some combination of health problems and a broken heart. At ten, Ezrha wasn't just the adult in the household, she had absolutely no supervision. Ezrha could more or less do whatever she wanted, whenever. Whenever her mother tried to play the "mom" card, Ezrha just threw it back in her face. No amount of pleading, yelling, or threatening her daughter would work, because Ezrha had a laundry list a mile long of serious bouts of neglect. So it was no surprise to anyone that her mother in turn did fuck all to help raise the girl, preferring to pretend they were sisters rather than mother and daughter.
By Ezrha's junior year in high school, she was failing majority of her classes due to how little she attended school. This was just fine with Rey, because she had it in her head that she herself would become a famous actress. With next to no money, Rey pulled Ezrha out of school, packed up their things, and moved them to Los Angeles to live with her sister. As one would imagine, Rey struggled with the business. Eventually she had to resort to other means to land roles, but only found the kind of success that resulted in those rip off of rip off horror films. Her daughter on the other hand caught the eye of Catherine Hardwicke down in Venice one day. The director was scouting the skateboard community for her upcoming, Lords of Dogtown when she found Ezrha smoking weed with a bunch of skateboarders. She'd developed an interest in casting the then seventeen year old due to how she handled the attentions of the crowd she was surrounded by, and how easily she wrapped them around her little finger. And so it was that Ezrha was discovered, while her mom had to hit the casting couch just to land an audition.
The thing was, Ezrha had never known what she wanted from life. The trouble she'd caused or found herself in the midst of always went back to boredom. Acting felt like a game. An acceptable and glorified way to engage in manipulation. Ways to poke and prod at others from behind a mask, and if she was lucky enough, maybe the role would even let her poke and prod at herself. Catherine became a cheerleader for Ezrha, the sort of hippie mom Rey had always longed to be. With some guidance and help, Ezrha was working along side a prestigious acting coach. A couple months later, she was signed with an agent and booking auditions all over town. Despite the jealousy that Rey harbored, she wanted to capitalize on Ezrha's success, so she played the game. In turn, Ezrha got away with murder.
There was little to question in Catherine Hardwicke's mind when it came to casting the role of Bella Swan, however, there was quite a lot for Ezrha to. Didn't she want the money? The notoriety? Didn't she trust Catherine? On an honest day, Ezrha would admit she's very concerned that she picked the wrong path that day. The money from Disturbia had proven to been solid. She had a lot of things going for her, she kind of liked this acting thing and for the first time in her life she wasn't that bored and she wasn't even setting shit on fire or doing large quantities of drugs. The turn though, happened in the blink of an eye. The fame happened in a blink of an eye. Every door that had ever been closed to her was suddenly open. Nothing felt real, and Ezrha couldn't resist testing life's boundaries.
And so the train went off the rails. DUI? Got out of it with enough cash. Diva behavior on set? She could deflect to the press and come across more human. Paparazzi trailing her every move? More scripts piled onto her agent's desk. Whatever she did, it only earned her more attention. So why would she stop?
Well, Steve McQueen was a good reason to stop. After she more or less stalked him and begged him for a chance at the role, he let her know he'd only take a chance on her if she cleaned up her act. So she went to rehab. And for awhile, she really did get her shit together, only that all went out the window when she reconnected with a long time ex and followed him back down the rabbit hole. And so it went. She'd clean up her act for her career, then toss it all away when it came time to be a person again.
Only, enough times around the block with a threat to her career put her on the straight and narrow. Warner Brothers offered her a chance at her dream role, but she had to abide by the strictest sobriety clause in the free world. This push was enough to give her incentive to clean up and really get her shit together again.
